DETROIT – On December 12, 2009 the Millennial Mayors Congress, a voluntary partnership of city officials and young leaders from 20 Detroit-area communities, called for a regional goal for reduced energy consumption by local governments, aiming for a collective 25% reduction by 2015 from 2005 levels. In addition, they will encourage a more than 5% reduction by 2015 from all other energy consumers in their communities.
“Adopting this goal was a consensus decision by a diverse group of civic leade…

When the Millennial Mayors Congress came together in June, the city officials and young leaders at the table made a conscious decision to take a different approach to problem solving. Rather than use traditional majority-rule to make decisions, MMC delegates created a consensus-driven forum in which open dialogue is encouraged and each voice at the table equally weighted.
Step one was deciding on a new approach. Step two was implementing it—considerably more ambitious. The Congress put the new…

On Thursday, October 22, delegates of the Millennial Mayors Congress will participate in a workshop on consensus building—an issue not only integral to the structure of the Congress, but essential to regional cooperation. I am excited to announce that we have enough space available to allow non-delegates to participate. This is a chance for young professionals and others interested in civic leadership to actively participate in an MMC session, as well as develop valuable consensus-building skill…

DETROIT – The Millennial Mayors Congress set the direction for its first year of operation last week, deciding to address the fiscal and environmental sustainability of its member communities. Community reinvestment and energy efficiency topped the action agenda articulated by the members. Additionally, the group called for increased and more flexible investments in the region by state and federal agencies to help address a systemic municipal finance crisis.

A common question asked by companies seeking to establish themselves in Michigan centers around the issue of young flight out of the state. Why do recent high school and college graduates feel the need to leave Michigan in search of "better" opportunity? Well, state legislative cuts to scholarships like the Michigan Promise certainly don't help the situation. As the state faces a scarcity of young talent compounded with a fiscal crisis, legislators are forced to make tough choices about what to…

This week city officials and rising leaders launched metro Detroit’s—and quite possibly the nation’s—first intergenerational, consensus-driven partnership focused on addressing regional issues. The Millennial Mayors Congress convened for its inaugural meeting on Saturday, June 6, 2009.
The Congress is made up of a two-person delegation from each participating city: a “local government representative,” such as the mayor or another city official who exercises legislative or executive authority, a…

Dear All,
With the fall of two of Detroit’s automakers comes another opportunity for our region to take the high road. We have relied on the Big 3 to define our region’s politics, social and living standards, economy and education structure for nearly 100 years. At this moment what can they really do for us? Our age of entitlement is over. Obviously, it is time for us to look elsewhere for a diverse leadership the same way the auto industry needs to go with something other than the combustible…

SECTION 1: CASE SUMMARY
“White flight” and the economic depression that followed it became an unwanted, but demonstrative American trend during the latter half of the twentieth century. As suburban development flourished on the boundaries of metropolises, the middle and upper classes, predominantly white, left the inner cities to gain more “living space.” However, those left behind, the non-white minorities, could not sustain their economy and their once solid neighborhoods deteriorated.…

Here's a new idea:
Let's create a regional council to govern downtown Detroit.
Now let me tell you why.
I start with two key assumptions:
1. Regions are the competitors in the global economy, not cities. Metro Detroit is one player and needs to act that way.
2. Urban centers are attractive to the new generation of young worker, who we want to attract to our region.
So, why not create a council of cities to govern downtown Detroit. We all need a strong downtown. Not every city needs…
